About the Real Estate Council of Ontario (RECO)

RECO is a not-for-profit corporation established in 1997 to regulate real estate agents and brokerages to protect consumers in Ontario’s real estate services sector. RECO administers the Trust in Real Estate Services Act, 2002. 

The Opportunity

RECO is establishing an Industry Advisory Council (IAC); a new, structured advisory body designed to offer ongoing, practitioner-level perspectives to RECO’s leadership team.

We are seeking up to 10 experienced professionals to serve as inaugural council members. The IAC will provide timely, evidence-informed advice on strategic priorities, emerging market trends and their regulatory implications; registrant education, competency, and conduct; the development or review of RECO's strategic priorities; and regulatory modernization initiatives that would benefit from sustained practitioner input.

Role & Key Responsibilities

As an IAC member, you will contribute your operational insight and industry knowledge to help shape RECO’s regulatory activities. Responsibilities include:

• Identifying Trends & Risks: Highlighting emerging business practices, market shifts, and risk factors in the real estate sector.
• Providing Strategic Input: Offering insights on major policy initiatives, regulatory modernization efforts, and strategic priorities.
• Meeting Preparation & Engagement: Reviewing distributed materials prior to meetings and contributing constructively during discussions.
• Direct Consumer Context: Participating in RECO’s annual Consumer Consultation Forum to gain direct exposure to consumer experiences and feedback.
• Meeting Commitment: Attending a minimum of four (4) quarterly meetings per year (at least two held in person), plus additional virtual sessions as required (minimum 75% attendance rate expected).

Membership Composition & Diversity

We are seeking candidates across three primary membership categories:

1. Registrant Members (including directors, officers, employees of registered brokerages): Active Ontario real estate salespersons, brokers, and brokers of record in good standing with RECO.
2. Unregistered Members (including brokerage owners, directors, officers, employees of registered brokerages or agents of industry associations) (Up to 2 seats): Experienced leaders in the industry.
3. Industry-Adjacent Practitioners (Up to 2 seats): Active, regulated professionals in adjacent Ontario sectors (e.g., mortgage brokers, home builders, or lenders).

• Practice Types: Residential and commercial real estate.
• Brokerage Sizes: Small, medium, and large/franchise models.
• Geography: Urban, suburban, and rural regions across Ontario.
• Demographics & Tenure: Ranging from promising mid-career practitioners to seasoned industry leaders, with a strong commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Eligibility & Ineligibility Criteria

Who Should Apply

• Demonstrates high ethical standards, integrity, and credibility in professional dealings.
• Ability to articulate market trends and regulatory risks constructively.
• Open to collaborating with diverse viewpoints in a respectful environment.
• Able to dedicate time for meeting preparation, travel, and attendance.
• For Registrants/Adjacent Professionals: Must hold active registration/licensure in good standing with RECO or their respective regulatory body.

Ineligibility

To ensure independence, the following individuals are not eligible to apply:

• Employees of RECO or individuals with a family member employed by RECO;
• Members of RECO's Board of Directors or individuals with a family member who is a Board member;
• Individuals with an unresolved conflict of interest that cannot be mitigated;
• Individuals who are registered lobbyists under any federal, provincial, or municipal lobbying registration regime, including the Ontario Lobbyists Registration Act, 1998, the federal Lobbying Act, or municipal lobbying by-laws; and
• Individuals who are the subject of an active complaint, investigation, or disciplinary proceeding before RECO, or who have a compliance or disciplinary history that RECO determines to be inconsistent with the standards expected of IAC members.

Remuneration & Support

• Honorarium/Remuneration: This is a voluntary, pro bono advisory position.
• Expenses: Reasonable out-of-pocket travel expenses incurred for in-person meetings will be fully reimbursed in accordance with RECO’s travel expense policy.
• Administrative Support: RECO's Secretariat will handle meeting logistics, agendas, distribution of materials, and orientation for new members.
