John O'Sullivan

Why did you decide to stand for election as a Director of RECO?
My name is John O’Sullivan and I am running for Director of RECO for Region 3 to be your voice at RECO.

I care deeply about the Realtor Community, and feel that being an active participant and giving-back is paramount to ensuring our association remains strong & provides value to its members. Having worked on committee with the Ottawa Real Estate Board, I understand the importance of working with as a team to be a strong voice for members. A proud Realtor; I enjoy speaking with other members, agencies, media and the public about the great work we achieve and value that we provide.

As my friends know, when I am not doing real estate-related stuff, or on lockdown, I am usually playing sports, reading, volunteering in the community and spending time with my family.

What attributes would you bring to RECO’s Board of Directors that would support its consumer protection mandate?
We work in a great industry that offers us so much. There is a lot that we do for our clients and every day can bring something new. The flip side is that there is a great deal the consumers of Ontario rely on us for; many hats to wear. We have chosen a career in real estate and hopefully all feel it is important to give back where possible. For the consumer protection mandate, it is important that RECO ensures consumers are able to make informed and confident choices themselves.

At the RECO board level, it is important to highlight my experience as a Broker. I have been on all sides of the transaction and bring an understanding the realities registrants face in residential and commercial trade. Also carry my unique insight from having worked previously in the Ontario Government (Attorney General and Min. of Labour). My firsthand knowledge of the framework RECO operates in, along with my practical experience as an active registrant are great attributes needed at the RECO board level. It is paramount to keep consumers informed of changes, aware of their rights and responsibilities.

Describe your experience(s) on a Board of Directors and/or committees of a public or private organization, trade association or not-for-profit organization.
Relevant experience includes having been a member of the Ottawa Real Estate Board Finance Committee, Vice Chair and founding member of TOPS Ontario , Volunteer on the Inter-ministerial Council of Ontario, Member of the Central Enforcement Table (Court Services/Attorney General). What business leadership skills/experience would you bring to RECO’s Board of Directors?
Currently: Broker at REMAX Hallmark Realty Group, Brokerage

Matt Robinson

Why did you decide to stand for election as a Director of RECO?
I’m what most would consider to be a young real estate agent with many more years to come in this industry, I’d like to help shape what that may look like in the future – 5, 10, 15, 25 years from now. With the many changes that have occurred in real estate in the last 20 years, I’m looking to help envision what this job will look like in the next 20 years. There is always an opportunity to learn more in this profession, and I’m taking this as another step to learn, grow, and hopefully help this industry.

What attributes would you bring to RECO’s Board of Directors that would support its consumer protection mandate?
One of RECO’s job is to regulate the real estate sector in order to ensure the public is protected against ‘the bad apples’. I’ve always believed in education as a number one priority with my clients. As mentioned previously, I am a younger member of our industry. The majority share of our current buyers/sellers being Gen Y or Millennials (according to a 2020 report from NAR), being part of this generation I can bring knowledge on the current struggles of getting into the real estate market, upsizing our homes, communication methods, and knowledge levels so we can start planning for the future of real estate and how it may change with even younger, tech inclined individuals purchasing property throughout the province.

Describe your experience(s) on a Board of Directors and/or committees of a public or private organization, trade association or not-for-profit organization.

What business leadership skills/experience would you bring to RECO’s Board of Directors?
Marketing, consumer relations, staffing, training, inventory management and sales – these are all business or leadership skills. I started to develop these skills in High School where I was invited to attend a business simulation competition held by the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Ontario and Sprott Business School. Everyone selected to attend was placed onto a team of three and assigned a company where we were responsible for the full cycle operations of the company. At the end of the multi-day simulation my team’s results were compared against the results of the other 650+ teams across Ontario. My team ended up winning the competition in no small part because my teammates and I had complementary backgrounds and skill sets. It was during this experience where I really understood that all organizations, big and small needed to have a diverse leadership group to truly be successful.

I went on to graduate from Algonquin College with an Advanced Diploma in Business Administration. After graduating I joined the workforce, where I began applying the knowledge I obtained in College with what I had learned from the competition to real life.

McDonalds is known for its superior training, employee relations and business execution, it’s also where I spent 7 years of my career honing my skills and abilities. I was responsible for predicting sales, meeting staffing requirements, managing inventory levels, employee training and a host of other responsibilities that made the multiple restaurants I was accountable for successful.

After transitioning to real estate, I’ve managed to build my business steadily over the last 6+ years. Being rookie of the year when I started, an outstanding achievement award this past year, and being invited to ‘Young Guns’ events with my brokerage.

I know I can put my knowledge and skills to use for you as a nominated Director of RECO.
