Steve Boxma

Why did you decide to stand for election as a Director of RECO?
I am running for re-election in Region 3 to further RECO’s mandate of protecting the public interest through a fair, safe and informed marketplace for both consumers and registrants. I believe that ensuring all Ontario registrants, both new and experienced, have access to the best education programs will make for a better Industry. Tougher penalties for offenders and ease of access to educational and compliance updates for registrants who are doing it right is how we accomplish this.

What attributes would you bring to RECO’s Board of Directors that would support its consumer protection mandate?
I have a very broad view of our Market and our Industry. I work and live just outside of Ottawa in Manotick, have spent time in Northern Ontario and have ties to the Seaway Valley and the Upper Ottawa Valley. I know what may be a problem in the Golden Horseshoe may not be a problem in Region 3 and solutions to protect consumers in that area may not work for consumers in our area. I believe my experience will allow me to find solutions to enhance protection for both consumers and registrants throughout the province.

Describe your experience(s) on a Board of Directors and/or committees of a public or private organization, trade association or not-for-profit organization.
RECO Director 2014 – present
Current Vice Chair – RECO Board of Directors Member – RECO CEO Subcommittee
Member – RECO Governance, People and Culture Committee, RECO Audit, Risk, Finance & Insurance
Committee and RECO Strategy & Organizational Performance Committee
past Chair – RECO Insurance Committee past Chair – RECO Finance Committee
past Member – RECO New Registrant Education Program Selection Committee Member – RECO REBBA Review Committee
Past Director – Canadian Highway Sufferance Warehouse Association Past Director – Ottawa Transportation Association

What business leadership skills/experience would you bring to RECO’s Board of Directors?
Over the last 6 years, as your Region 3 Director, I have brought a strong, independent voice to the RECO Board table. During this time I have continued to upgrade my skills and education, concentrating on areas that I felt would be a benefit to the Organization, Registrants and Consumers.

Most recently I have completed 2 intensive courses at the Institute of Corporate Directors. The ICD Boardroom Financial Essentials course gave me a greater understanding of the financial requirements involved in running a large organization and the ICD Board Oversight of Culture Course showed me that people are an Organization’s greatest strength and we need to make sure employees, registrants, and consumers feel that their voices are being heard. I know what is required to allow our industry to flourish and I will continue to work to those goals every day.

By maintaining an environment that protects Consumers and ethical registrants, while sanctioning transactions, registrants and consumers that attempt to take advantage of the public, we will continue to increase the public confidence in us.
