Why did you decide to stand for election as a Director of RECO?
I have a strong belief in the strength and integrity of our profession. I believe I can foster and develop this professionalism by working with other leaders at RECO and promoting the goals we all aspire to. I believe that the best way for a Director to fulfill RECO’s mandate to protect the consumer is to align and synchronize professional development and leadership efforts of RECO, Registrants, Organized Real Estate and like minded government agencies. I believe my long history of serving our profession as well as my demonstrated ability to promote and defend the needs of registrants across Ontario endorses those concepts.

What attributes would you bring to RECO’s Board of Directors that would support its consumer protection mandate?
Confidence: A demonstrated ability to promote the needs of our constituents at the strategic level and work within that framework as a team member to achieve our goals.

Insight: My experience has taught me that there is a time to be patient and a time to be assertive. I believe the skills to recognize when the time is right to do either. I believe communication is key to achieving our goals and I will support the efforts of RECO to be not only visible but informative and educational.

Commitment: I believe all professional real estate salespeople support and endorse our Code of Ethics and I am committed to ensuring that it remains a living document that remains strong, effective and fairly adjudicated.

Describe your experience(s) on a Board of Directors and/or committees of a public or private organization, trade association or not-for-profit organization.
With over 30 years as a volunteer and over 20 years serving as a Director and or Board President/Provincial President has provided me with the experience and insight to work as an effective team member in promoting RECO’s mandate and effectively advancing the aspirations of our registrants. As President of the Ontario Real Estate Association in 2006 I personally initiated and co-wrote the curriculum for Leadership Development within our Association. This Leadership Program has flourished and is now provided across Canada and in areas of the United States. I have been President of two Real Estate Boards and have served on virtually every committee at the Board and Provincial level. I have served as a member of RECO’s Discipline Committee, Liaision Committee and Licensing Education Contract Committee. Outside our profession I serve as a volunteer at the community level and I’m Immediate Past President of the Smith Falls Flying Club.

What real estate industry experience/expertise do you possess?
Serving a large and diverse geographical area has given me the opportunity to market both commercial and residential real estate. Selling homes, farms, waterfront, vacation land, large retail and small retail presents special challenges and develops skills that are transferable to leadership efforts with our profession.

What other business skills/experience would you bring to RECO’s Board of Directors?
A demonstrated ability to work with administrative staff and CEOs to promote and fulfill our mandate.

A history of Chairing Financial Committees at the Board level as well as the Ontario Real Estate Association.

I have chaired CEO Performance Reviews at both the local and provincial levels.

I have participated in both informal and formal risk assessment exercises and have been actively involved in managing challenges to our profession including competition issues and governance issues.

I served as Education Chair of the Futures Initiative Task Force at the Canadian Real Estate Association and was instrumental in the adoption of professional development activities and education at the national level.

I have served as the public spokesperson for both local Boards and the Ontario Real Estate Association.
