"Fostering confidence
and upholding integrity in real estate transactions"

The Real Estate Council of Ontario (RECO) regulates the activity of trading in real estate in the public interest.

RECO administers the Real Estate and Business Brokers Act, 2002 and associated regulations on behalf of the provincial government.

HOW TO BECOME A REGISTRANT

To become registered as a salesperson in Ontario, individuals must successfully complete their pre-registration courses within 18 months of starting their Real Estate as a Professional Career course. The Ontario Real Estate Association (OREA) administers these courses on behalf of RECO.

An application for registration as a salesperson must be submitted to RECO within 12 months of successfully completing the pre-registration segment. In addition, anyone applying for registration must be at least 18 years old and a resident of Canada. Salespersons, once registered under REBBA 2002, must complete three additional educational courses in their initial two year registration cycle in order to achieve permanent salesperson registration status.

Upon obtaining permanent registration under REBBA 2002, salespersons must complete 24 credits in continuing education courses/seminars. The continuing education requirements must be completed every two year cycle in order to maintain a real estate registration.

Requirements for registration as a broker under REBBA 2002 include being employed as a salesperson for at least 24 of the 36 months immediately preceding the date of application. The educational requirements for becoming a broker include an elective course not taken in the articling segment and the Real Estate Broker course. Registrants who have successfully completed the Real Estate Broker course must submit an application for registration as a broker to RECO within 12 months of successfully completing the Real Estate Broker course examination.
