My daughter is thinking about becoming a real estate salesperson and we’ve heard a new program is being developed for people entering the industry. What can you tell your readers?
First of all, you’re right – the Real Estate Council of Ontario’s (RECO) new Real Estate Salesperson Program will launch later this year thanks to our partnership with Humber College and NIIT Canada.
My RECO colleagues and I are excited about the new program. Its learning path will mirror the flow of a real estate transaction, and weave key legal elements into the curriculum so learners really understand their obligations as they’re defined in the Real Estate and Business Brokers Act, 2002 (REBBA), its Code of Ethics, and other applicable legislation. Learners will receive a useful mix of theory and its practical application.
The program will cover many critical topics, such as preparing contracts, developing marketing strategies, and the processes for buying, selling, and leasing residential and commercial properties and how the law applies to each. Our vision is for new salespeople to have the knowledge and skills they’ll need to become practice ready on day one.
The foundational course materials will be delivered through e-learning, so your daughter will be able to engage with the content nearly anywhere and at any time. That said, she will have her knowledge tested through in-person exams (day, evening and weekend options will be available). The program will also include two mandatory in-person simulation sessions, each a week long, that will allow her to apply her knowledge in real-life scenarios while being coached by experienced real estate professionals.
Your daughter will be able to register for the program online through the Humber College website. Of course she will need a Canadian secondary school diploma or an acceptable equivalent credential as a prerequisite, but I should note that many real estate professionals have post-secondary education before they enter the program. Once she is accepted into the program, she’ll be able to work through the courses at her own pace but she will have to complete them within two years.
Should your daughter decide that real estate is the right career path for her, she will likely appreciate the final course in the pre-registration program, Getting Started, because it will discuss nuts-and-bolts considerations such as obtaining and maintaining registration and insurance with RECO, and strategies for selecting a brokerage for employment.
