Why did you decide to stand for election as a Director of RECO?
I am now completing my first term as a RECO Director. I am proud of our accomplishments and I wish to continue to serve the mandate and fulfill our current strategic plan. My term included developing that plan and supporting the work required to bring about the newly proposed legislation and education platform. We also hired and onboarded a Chief Executive Officer. A commitment to quality and good communication enabled us to face obstacles and move these projects along. These are accomplishments of which all Ontario registrants can be proud. I wish to continue to apply lessons learned and work hard to fulfill RECO’s mandate for the betterment of the real estate sector and to ensure the consumer is protected.

What attributes would you bring to RECO’s Board of Directors that would support its consumer protection mandate?
My experience (within and outside of RECO) and education has given me a deep understanding of this role in terms of strategic planning, financial oversight, and good governance. I have sought to ensure my formal education continues to meet the demands of the RECO board table and have taken many courses to this end. I feel that a strong RECO is a strong real estate industry and without the trust of consumers we (as registrants) can not do our job.

The new act will bring new challenges. My experience will enable me to ensure the viewpoint of registrants is heard, as we move forward toward implementation.

Describe your experience(s) on a Board of Directors and/or committees of a public or private organization, trade association or not-for-profit organization.
I am currently completing a three year term as RECO Director and within that period we developed a Strategic Plan and supported staff in their role in consulting with the Province of Ontario on the development of our recently proposed real estate legislation. I am Chair of RECO’s newly formed Strategic Planning and Operational Performance committee to ensure we remain on track to achieve our goals. I am also a member of the Governance Committee, the Regulator’s Education Committee and have previously served on the Finance Committee.

I am also Director of the Art Gallery of Burlington and serve on the Finance Committee. I previously held the position of Chair with the Trillium Foundation – Thames Valley and have sat on many municipal boards and committees. I served on various committees with the Woodstock-Ingersoll Real Estate Association when living in that board area.

What business leadership skills/experience would you bring to RECO’s Board of Directors?
In addition to a Bachelor of Arts Degree and many years of varied board and work experience, I have completed in the last three years:
– Institute of Corporate Directors and Rotman School of Management (U of T) program in Not For Profit Governance (two day intensive)
– many ICD workshops/webinars in Financial Literacy, Strategic Planning, Risk Management, Political Intelligence and Oversight.

I have been a registrant for sixteen years including fourteen as a Broker. In addition to directly providing a full range of real estate services to the public, I have been a Brokerage Managing Director and Real Estate Trainer. Previous to this I have worked in management in the non-profit sector, taught business courses with Fanshawe College and was an Art Dealer. These positions all required continued education in Human Resource Management, Accounting and Management Skills.

My experience on other boards and committees, within and outside of the Real Estate industry, has further developed my board skills and strengths.

Why did you decide to stand for election as a Director of RECO?
Consumer protection is an important resource that needs to continue to be available to the Public. It’s through transparency that a consumer begins to feel comfortable with an organization who is working on their behalf. In my own practice working with the Public (Buyer/Seller), it’s been my intention to educate the consumers. The transaction will always run more seamlessly when all parties involved understand the different aspects of the process. Without fail my approach has led to much success in my industry. Providing the relevant information that a client needs to assist them in making the best decision is of great importance. It is comforting to know that RECO as an organization has goals and objectives that line up with my own, which is why I have chosen to stand for election.

What attributes would you bring to RECO’s Board of Directors that would support its consumer protection mandate?
Attributes that I bring to the RECO are integrity, respect for the industry, the ability to act in a non-biased/ prejudice manner, a high moral compass and impeccable ethical standards. I also bring strong communication skills in two languages (English, French) and I’m comfortable with public speaking. I have various experiences working independently as well as part of a dynamic team. I strongly believe that my skills and attributes from my current and past positions give me a great edge on being able to provide educational pieces to consumers. I bring an excitement and a passion for the industry that continues to drive me forward and motivates me to want to be a part of this great opportunity of the continued growth of our industry.

Describe your experience(s) on a Board of Directors and/or committees of a public or private organization, trade association or not-for-profit organization.
Some of my most current experience is with the Rotary Club of Kingsville Southshore. I am one of the founding members of the Club which was established as of April 2019. I currently sit in a leadership position as one of the Directors for the club and have absolutely loved being a part of what Rotary stands for, people of action. I have taken a leadership roll in the Club’s committee to establish by-laws for their current and future members. As most clubs have been around for decades this was a process to look beyond the scope of how we are currently functioning as a Club, and to incorporate legislation that would be able to mould and transform the future generations to adapt and refine as our Club grows. I believe RECO’s mandate is very much in line with what I am currently a part of. People of action can absolutely lend itself to the work that RECO provides. Consumer protection demands action from the governing individuals to work in the best interest of the Public. In the same token providing legislation and guidelines that can be adaptable for the changing needs of the market and public interest.

What business leadership skills/experience would you bring to RECO’s Board of Directors?
I have studied business practices in great detail from marketing, financing, HR, statistical & data management to interpersonal skills. Studying and developing these skills has been a large part of my almost 5 years in the industry. To maintain a competitive advantage in my marketplace it is advantageous to be educated and up to par given all the various scenarios that present themselves in our industry. As a sales representative who works not only with residential clients, but with investors and commercial clients also, I have to be able to discuss financial aspects of a varying type of properties to determine profitability. Legal contracts is something that I have become familiar with over time. Through my Director position with the Rotary Club of Kingsville Southshore I have been exposed to a varying amount of contracts, by laws, insurance requirements, events planning, public speaking, and succession planning to maintain the integrity of the club and the work we do. I’ve typically found myself in leadership roles as it’s an area that I gravitate towards and a space in which I feel comfortable. I have previously worked with the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Sport on varying part time and full-time basis for about 5 years. I am familiar with the manner in which the Ministry operates and what requirements are set in place to follow protocol. I was responsible for the social media outreach for the Southwestern Ontario region during part of my time at the Ministry. I understand the standard of professionalism which is expected and required when working on behalf and representing the Ministry.
